New York Scandia Symphony has served the communities of New York City with innovative and creative programs of Scandinavian music for the past 35 years, sharing the musical treasures and cultural heritage of Scandinavia with American audiences.
Music Director and Conductor Dorrit Matson will lead the orchestra in a program titled “Under Northern Lights”. The concert will feature 52 of New York City’s finest musicians performing some of the great masterworks of Northern Europe:
Jean Sibelius: “Finlandia”
Emil Hartmann: “Violin Concerto” Stephanie Chase, Violin
Carl Nielsen: “Symphony no. 5”

The Scandinavian Music Festival 2024 in Fort Tryon Park, now in its 20th season, is a unique series of three outdoor summer concerts performed by musicians of the Scandia Symphony and guest artists on Sundays in June. The concerts take place in a scenic and attractive venue, on Billings Lawn, below the Heather Gardens and with spectacular views of Hudson River. Musicians of the Scandia Symphony will present the musical treasures and cultural heritage of Scandinavia to the audiences.
Programs:
June 9th, 2024, 2:00 PM: SCANDIA BRASS QUINTET will perform their special repertoire of popular folk tunes and brass quintets, representing compositions from all of the five Scandinavian countries.
June 11th, 2024, 6:00 PM: In a program titled “SUNSET CONCERT” the SCANDIA STRING QUARTET will appear on Billings Lawn with a backdrop of the sun setting over Hudson River. The concert will feature beautiful string quartets by Scandinavian composers.
June 16th, 2024, 2:00 PM: Our “CONCERTO PROGRAM” will be performed by the SCANDIA STRING ORCHESTRA in a concert including three solo concertos, each representing the Baroque era, the19th century Romantic era and the contemporary era:
Johan Helmich Roman: Flute Concerto – Lisa Hansen, Flute
Jean Sibelius: Suite for Violin and Strings – Mayuki Fukuhara, Violin
Frank Foerster: Suite of Scandinavian Folk Melodies for Viola and Strings – Frank Foerster, Viola
Dorrit Matson: Conductor
